Fossil Gen 5 LTE Watch 3 Review
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Design, Screen and Build Quality
Fossils GEN 5 LTE comes in a sleek design having a cool stainless steel bezel around it to improve the style. Taking into account that Fossil is a watch manufacturer in general, design is a unique selling point for them. It’s 44mm size, and large screen display makes it an easy-to-view smartwatch. The silicone strap can be replaced with leather or mesh straps as well, but we suggest that you use the silicone variant for a more comfortable workout session. The 3 ATM water-resistance nature does not allow you to use this smartwatch in water and go for swims in a pool. Remember to keep it aside while diving into a pool.
The Fossil Gen 5 LTE Watch comes with 3 buttons that are generally easy to use.Â
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Display
The lightweight, 1.28 inch AMOLED display and the 416X416 resolution ensure that visibility is not an issue with the Fossil Gen 5 LTE Watch. The touch screen display with multiple watch faces allows you to customize the look of your watch as per need. You will find some preloaded faces, whereas there are hundreds that you can download from the Wear OS app. The built-in GPS is not great when it comes to picking up signals, but you can still leave your phone while you stay connected through calls and texts from your wrist-based smartwatch.Â
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Battery Life and Battery Mode
One of the best among the Fossil Smartwatch LTE Features, in our opinion, is the battery life and the 3 battery modes that help you save your watch battery and turn it down when not in use. You can choose from the 3 battery modes: Daily, Custom, and Extended. The daily mode can last around 15 hours, whereas the custom mode can last up to 24 hours. If you are looking for longer battery life, you could switch to the extended mode or the time-only battery mode that can last for over a couple of days, if not more.
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Health And Fitness Tracking
Fossil Gen 5 LTE watch comes with a pretty accurate Step counter and heart rate monitor. The built-in altimeter allows you to track your elevation as well. You can activate the heart rate monitor with the help of the Google Fit App. You can track your health and fitness with third-party apps that are available on android. The Google Fit app can help you track the Move minutes and heart points if that is what you are looking for in your fitness accessory. However, if you wish to have a more detailed view of your health and fitness metrics, you could use the third-party apps relevant for the same. Some of the apps that you can use on your Fossil Gen 5 LTE are Nike Run Club, Strava, and Ride with GPS. Many other apps are compatible with your Fossil Gen 5 LTE to meet your health and fitness tracking requirements.Â
There was a software update in August 2020 for the old Fossil Gen 5 (not the LTE variant that is currently being reviewed) that added features such as VO2 Max, sleep tracking, and Fossil’s new wellness app to the watch. Even though Fossil Gen 5 LTE was released in 2021, it did not ship with the software update. Fossil did not say when they would release this update for the LTE variant.Â
Gen 5 LTE Fossil Smartwatch FeaturesÂ
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Music Integration
Most of the music integration will not be possible with the LTE cellular connection and you will not be able to stream music on the go, if you do not have your phone with you. Storing MP3 files is an option for you, however, integrating or downloading music onboard from Spotify or YouTube music is not an option. You can stream music from Pandora on your smartwatch on the go. The speakers are good enough for you to stream the music clearly while on a run. You could also use the Bluetooth headset to listen to the music from your Fossil Gen 5 LTE smartwatch. The smartwatch has 1 GB RAM and an 8 GB internal storage allowing you to store a large number of music files on your watch at ease, for an on-the-go music experience.
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Smartphone Notification
In our Review of the Fossil Gen 5 LTE Smartwatch, we found that the smartwatch is perfect for those of you who are looking for a smartwatch that can keep you notified and connected to calls and texts even when you are on a run, and do not have your phone on you. It is a great smartwatch for making calls and responding to texts. The texts can be typed easily with the responsive touch screen feature. You do not have to worry about the call feature either. The mic is loud and clear for the person on the other end of the call to hear you out. In the US, you can only call through Verizon’s Network. Other networks and in other countries are yet to be integrated into the smartwatch.
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: NFC Payments
You can now make payments with your Fossil Gen 5 LTE Smartwatch hassle-free. You need not carry your wallets to pay for vendors. Considering that most places accept Google Pay, you can now make payments to them through your watch. Fossil Gen 5 LTE Smartwatch has NFC payments integrated for Google Pay to make your payment activities easy and quick.
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Google Assistant Compatibility
With the use of the Mic and the Speaker, you can easily give commands to Google Assistant to get your job done. Whether you wish to make a call, respond to a text or control the music, it can all be done with the Google Assistant commands through your smartwatch.
Fossils Gen 5 LTE: Price and Availability
You can Buy Fossil LTE Smartwatch Online, and the watch is not available in India yet. Fossil LTE watch Price in India is expected to be around INR 26148/ $ 355. Even though there are some good features related to calling, texting, and battery life, we believe that the smartwatch is not reasonable in terms of price.Â
Is Fossil Gen 5 LTE worth considering over the older Fossil Gen 5?
As we took a look at the Fossil LTE Smartwatch Full Specifications, we realized that it lacked some of the major features that were offered to the older Fossil Gen 5 model in its latest upgrade. We need to wait for the software upgrade on the Gen 5 LTE model to get us the features such as Sleep Tracking, Vo2max, and the latest wellness app integration of fossils. So in our opinion, even though both the original and the LTE version of the Fossil Gen 5 smartwatch could be better, we prefer the original variant over the LTE, unless the upgrade comes along. Â
Is Fossil Gen 5 LTE worth the price?
If Wear OS is your thing, then it is good since the current version has LTE in it. You could get a better smartwatch at a lower price by compromising on LTE since Wear OS has its own issues with many users.Â
Is Fossil Gen 5 LTE worth buying for iOS users?
Fossil Gen 5 can be used with iOS but Gen 5 LTE cannot be used with the LTE version
Conclusion
The Fossil Gen 5 LTE smartwatch is a classy and sleek-looking accessory to compliment your style. It is good for Wear OS users. But Wear OS has its own limitations and there are better watches for the same price if you are okay with other operating systems from Samsung (Tizen OS), Apple, and Fitbit. Fossil could have used the latest hardware for Wear OS (Snapdragon Wear 4100 instead of 3100) given the watch launched much later than its highly successful Fossil Gen 5. Also, the watch did not ship with the software upgrade that Fossil Gen 5 got in August 2020, and iOS compatibility is not added for the Gen 5 LTE (even though the iOS compatibility is there for the older Fossil Gen 5). Without compromising on any feature, I would prefer Apple Watch SE (for Apple users) at the same price and Galaxy Watch 3 (Tizen OS, which works well for Android users) over Fossil Gen 5 LTE.
